Designer Spotlight: Deryn Mentock
A brief story of what you do and why you do it.
I've always been a maker of things and have had my finger in just about every creative pie, but jewelry making is a passion. I love sharing what I do.
How did you get into jewelry design?
When I was a kid, my mom and I enjoyed many happy hours creating together, including making jewelry. She's truly talented and has inspired my own creativity in so many ways.
What makes your collection unique?
Over many years my style has developed and sharpened. It's truly an expression of my inner artist. Each piece that I create is heartfelt and unique, stamped with my voice.
What are your inspirations?
I'm inspired by so many things! Some of the things that most affect my work are nature, spirituality, color and texture. The design process is most important to my work and, I believe, what makes it successful.
How are you making a difference in your life?
I've devoted much hard work at developing my own unique style as well as developing the business end of things. My students and friends have made a huge mark on me and been so supportive, making it feel less like work and more like play. But, the fail safe thing that works for me and makes the most difference is prayer.
What's something unusual about you that makes you “you”?
When people see my pieces or visit my blog, I think the thing that they notice the most about me is my spirituality and faith, as well as the fact that I'm unafraid to talk about those things.
What's the biggest struggle in running your jewelry business like a business? OR What is your biggest success in running your business like a business?
My biggest struggle has been accounting. For me, that part of running a business is nothing but drudgery. One of the very best business decisions I've made is to get an accountant. My biggest success has been the people I've been able to reach and get to know…and love!
