Designer Spotlight: Megan Petersen

A brief story of what you do and why you do it.

I absolutely love creating unique pieces that my customers can wear to express themselves, or show off to start unlikely conversations. Growing up as a shy introvert myself, I've always leaned on my clothing and accessories as a means of standing out and getting noticed. It's my goal to provide that same means for my customers.

How did you get into jewelry design?

My grandfather was into the Native American beadwork when I was young, and he passed on some pattern books and extra beads to me and my sister. I've been addicted ever since.

What makes your collection unique?

A lot of my jewelry lines are inspired by the fine art world. I strive to create truly unique pieces that not only stand out, but that are recognizable as part of my signature brand.

What are your inspirations?

Besides the art world, a lot of my pieces are inspired by fashion. I have a massive closet (correction: closetS), and I understand the need to have a necklace/bracelet/set of earrings to pair with every outfit. I not only create pieces that are works of art, but WEARABLE art that can easily be worn at the office, during an evening out, or even casually at home.

How are you making a difference in your life?

Before I went full-fledged into my business, I wasn't only working 1 day job. I was working a day job, an evening job, freelance jobs, a weekend job, and holiday seasonal work when I could get it. At one point, I was working a total of 9 jobs!!! It was draining and it didn't feel like progress as all of the shifts I was picking up barely made any difference in my bills. Finally, after I decided to dedicate more time to my business, I was so grateful when it began paying off and will hopefully continue to do so as I work towards growing and developing it further]

What's something unusual about you that makes you “you”?

I strive to see the positivity or humor in any situation, no matter how sucky, and I really like to let my fans get to know the “real me,” whether that be through my blog, twitter feed, or personal e-mail correspondence.

What is your biggest success in running your business like a business?

Learning to be as productive as possible, usually by working in batches and careful planning, has allowed me to not only run a successful jewelry business, but keep up with my day job to boot. I am always striving to refine my skill and my process, as well as helping other along their journey as well.
