Designer Spotlight: Samantha Lockwood
A brief story of what you do and why you do it.
I love to see the way a flower can make anyone smile. Helping other women feel beautiful and sexy is ultimately why I do what I do. I love the idea of the “humble diva”. My line called “Fleurings” is a collection of mini vase jewelry that keeps flowers fresh for hours. I make earrings, necklaces and soon lapel pins and hair clips… all of which hold a few drops of water and allow you to wear many kinds of flowers. Wearing fresh flowers is a magical experience. They are a symbol of love. Flowers make you feel so feminine and special. Fleurings are a new spin on this tradition. My line makes styling with flowers easy and long lasting. Add water, add flowers of your choice and just go. Match flowers to any outfit. The whole look of the jewelry changes just depending on if you wear orchids, daisies, mini roses…etc. There are so many different options to wear with fancy or casual looks.
How did you get into jewelry design?
I just stumbled into it honestly. I'm an artist at heart, I love acting, painting, sculpting… all through high school and college I made beaded and wire wrapped necklaces just for fun. Then when I had the idea to make mini vase earrings.. I drew out the design, had it cast, then went into production shortly thereafter.
What makes your collection unique?
Fleurings is really the only line solely dedicated to holding water and flowers. This is the mini vase jewelry collection.
What are your inspirations?
My Grandmother sort of inspired this line when she told me to ‘wear a flower in my hair' to work to make better tips. I was a waitress in my early twenties for a little while. Sure enough, her advice totally worked. (Fresh flowers make an excellent conversation piece.) My tips nearly doubled just because customers would interact with me more. They would ask about my flowers, “are they real?” etc… So I created Fleurings mini vase earrings to keep stems wet and flowers fresher for longer. I wanted my flowers to last throughout my shift. After creating earrings, I came out with necklaces and next I will have mini vase Lapel Pins and Hair Clips.
How are you making a difference in your life?
For me it's balancing the small things and the big things as well. It's easy for me to get too focused on one or the other. In regards to my business it means taking time to make sure my customers are satisfied and all small orders are taken care of as well as keeping my eyes on a larger vision and staying focused on the big moves I need to make. This is something I apply to my life in every aspect. I want to reach my big goals while having fun in the meantime and making people around me feel happy and satisfied as well.
What's something unusual about you that makes you “you”?
Sometimes I say exactly what I am thinking and it's not always to my advantage. Although I have to say I really like this part about me and the people closest to me have come to love this part about me. My friends would say it's the part about me that makes people laugh, or can piss them off and hurt feelings… at times this quality has pushed people away from me but at least I don't put on a facade or try to “act” like someone else. I am who I am… maybe that alone is unusual. I also love to drive with my foot out the window sometimes… that's a little unusual too I guess.
What's the biggest struggle in running your jewelry business like a business? OR What is your biggest success in running your business like a business?
My biggest struggle has been figuring out the right business model for my line and getting the work “out there” … my biggest successes have been recent with features on Good Morning America, Fab.com and the cover of the Honolulu Newspaper last summer. Anytime I have a returning customer I consider that a huge success too.
